Storytelling in the Classroom

A good story transports you to another world, introduces you to fascinating characters, invites you into their lives. It makes you think and feel, laugh and cry. It embraces you and absorbs you until the imaginary becomes real and the real gets put on hold. Whether it’s from a page or on a screen, a good story has the power to change people. Empower your students to become creative storytellers.

To get your students started, in this section is a comprehensive set of lesson plans for both the K-2 and 3-5 levels that provides a step-by-step guide to the writing process, and which is aligned to the Common Core State Standards Initiative, the Standards for the English Language developed by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the International Reading Association (IRA). Download the standards that apply to the lesson plans here. In addition, we are providing recommended activities that parents can do with their children to support the writing process at home. Please feel free to download and send home with your students.

Your students’ writing can continue to go from good to great if they follow a few simple rules. In addition to the lesson plans provided for each step of the writing process, use these two additional one sheets that feature characters from Transformers Prime to bring out the very best in their storytelling and watch their writing transform.

When your students see their writing go from good to great, that’s transformation. When the robots of Transformers Prime disguise themselves as everyday objects, that’s transformation. Then there are the natural and physical transformations that occur all around us. Science, after all, is transformation in action and it’s pretty much everywhere. We hope our new, science lesson plans inspire your students to notice and investigate them.
